Buy nitriding steel

According to EN 10085 (or formerly DIN 17 211), nitriding steel is a heat-treatable steel alloyed with elements such as aluminium, molybdenum or chromium. These are good nitrite formers, as a result of which nitriding of the steel is made possible. After processing, the steel has a particularly high surface hardness and is also characterised by good wear resistance. Due to the thermal stability of the nitrides, these steels are temper-resistant up to 400 °C. Contact WIEHLSTAHL with confidence if you would like to buy nitriding steel. Below we inform you about the grades we carry.

1.8519: Buying nitriding steel from WIEHLSTAHL

Basically, we have two different grades available for customers who want to buy nitriding steel from us: 1.8519 and 1.8550. 1.8519, also known as 31CrMoV9+QT, is a nitriding steel for high wear stress. It is often used for extruder tools such as screws and barrels or for plasticising tools. This nitriding steel is used for wear parts that must withstand certain stresses. These include, for example, thermosets and thermoplastics with reinforcing materials, fillers, PVC or hot steam valve parts.

Buy steel 1.8550

Nitriding steel 1.8550 (or 34CrAlNi7-10+QT) is used in particular in automotive engineering and general mechanical engineering. It is used for quenched and tempered components whose surfaces are exposed to extreme wear. These include cam discs, pinion shafts and eccentrics. 1.8550 is unsuitable for welded constructions due to its difficult weldability. The steel is hot-formed at 850 to 1,050 °C and should be cooled down afterwards. For the production of 1.8550 - as with all nitriding steels - many processing steps are necessary.

Buying nitriding steel: general information on nitriding steel

Nitriding is generally used to harden the surface of steels. The use of nitrogen makes the surface particularly heat-resistant. The nitrogen enrichment of the steel's surface layer also ensures a high degree of hardness. While the core of the steel remains tough after heat treatment, hardening only takes place in an extremely thin layer on the surface of the workpiece. The nitriding agents used release nitrogen during the process, which diffuses into the red-hot steel. In addition to the otherwise unattainable hardness, nitrided steel is characterised by good sliding properties.

Buying steel from WIEHLSTAHL: Contact details

Since the beginning of our entrepreneurial activity in the 1970s, we have developed into a full-range supplier. Customers from various industries turn to us with confidence in case of buying steel. Our customers come from both trade and industry and purchase bright, engineering and/or tool steel from us for their individual purposes. Among other things, they appreciate our large selection with regard to the available cross-sections of the different steels. Furthermore, we have had a quality audit in accordance with DIN ISO 9001 since 2003, and at the beginning of 2018 our company was re-certified in accordance with the adapted standard.
